Choosing the right ball is critical to cutting your golf handicap. A ball impacts your game almost as much as your clubs, so it s important to choose a ball that s right for you. Below is a six-step process for selecting the right golf ball, a process I often review in my golf lessons and golf tips. It s a relatively new selection approach. But first, let s review the standard historical approach to choosing a golf ball.

Standard Selection Approach

With this approach you chose a golf ball going from the tee forward. In other words, you hit balls from the tee and observed their performance characteristics. You based your decisions primarily on control and distance, depending on their preference.

The days are long gone when manufacturers disgorged mammoth quantities of products with little or no variation, supposedly aimed for the masses. The above approach worked well with objects of necessity but has turned obsolete of late. People have their needs taken care of; what’s now wanted is a sense of individuality whether ascribed to an individual or institution.

Golf ball manufacturers, like their counterparts in other spheres, have cached on with the trend of the times and have come out with personalized or customized golf balls. These personalized golf balls are aimed at golf-related celebrations, birthdays or annual tournaments. The customization extends

to anything at all that needs to be commemorated. These personalized golf balls usually have up to three customized lines of fifteen to seventeen characters (upper case Arial text and Alpha- numeric characters in English) with spaces. These balls are usually printed with blue, green, red or black ink, with some manufacturers also proffering silver and gold prints. A word of caution would be apt to include here for inscribed golf balls as against the printed personalized golf balls. These inscribed ones however light the inscription may be, have their flight affected unlike the printed ones.
